This time last year, the Lady Bisons were celebrating the program’s second ASUN Championship win after a thrilling and dominant three-game run through the conference tournament. Lipscomb came in as the top seed, won all three games, and clinched the trophy with a win over the six seed North Florida. Senior pitcher Mandy Jordan was named the Tournament MVP thanks in part to a complete-game effort in the title game where she allowed just four hits and two runs. She also shut out 4-seed North Alabama over 12 innings in the opening round of the tournament. Fortel was in the championship game, while Higgins drove in two runs. Hannah DeVault added a home run while being walked in her other three at-bats, and Peyton Ward nearly hit for the cycle with a single, double, and triple. After the excruciating wait, the Lady Bisons were able to celebrate as they were chosen by the selection committee as an at-large bid. It was the first such occurrence in program history, and they were the first program to do so in Lipscomb’s Division I era. Only the volleyball team has earned an at-large bid since, and it came in the same year. The Lady Bisons entered the tournament as the 2-seed in the Knoxville regional.

We are grateful to those who registered to play fall ball this season. The proposed practice start date of August 22nd is not realistic given the current health situation. The board has decided to revisit a fall ball start date after Labor Day weekend. We understand that the odds are not in our favor for a fall ball season to actually take place, but Placer County and the City of Rocklin are supportive of youth sports. They are allowing conditioning and training to continue, as long as it meets the guidelines.
While we wait for some of the uncertainty to fade, we are going to offer some conditioning clinics for girls registered for fall ball. Look for info on these clinics in days. The NCAA also granted an extra year of eligibility to college seniors. The impact of coronavirus on sports is that right now, all recruiting activity is happening online. The timing of when sports will come back is being determined by the state , local and national governing bodies. Here is more information on how coronavirus will impact Softball. For some divisions, coaches can reach out earlier than that. The NCAA established its rules to protect elite athletes from getting bombarded with coach communications.
Over time, early recruiting has become more and more popular in softball—and sports in general—as coaches and athletes have found ways to establish contact well before the timeline set forth by the NCAA softball recruiting rules. To slow down early recruiting, the NCAA released a stricter set of rules for Division 1 softball coaches in In the past, the easiest way for college coaches to initiate contact with young athletes was by working through their club or high school coach.
The athlete could then call the college coach at the agreed upon time and the college coach can answer the phone. While contact from coach to athlete is much more restricted by these new rules, athletes still can—and should—be proactive in the recruiting process.
